How Do Air Purifiers Work?

Air purifiers can help people find some relief from indoor allergies such as smoke, mold, dust and pet dander. Air purifiers have been around for many years and there are a couple of different ways that they work.

HEPA Filtration System Air Purifiers

This type works by pulling air through a filtration system and a sieve and trapping particles and pollutants and then pushing the cleaner air back out into the space. The more times air passes through an air purifier the cleaner it becomes. These filters are known as HEPA filters. HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. HEPA filters are guaranteed to trap at least 99.97 percent of airborne particles greater in size than 3 microns. (A micron is 1/25400 of an inch and we are unable to see anything smaller in size than 10 microns.)

Electronic Purifier

This type of purifier works by drawing in the particles by way of a fan and then charge the particles and they are then drawn into an electronic plate. These types of purifiers do not require filters to be changed out regularly.

Other types of purifiers

In addition to these two types of purifiers there are also:

  • Ozone
  • Ionic
  • Negative ion

Each of these works slightly differently however they all have shown to reduce pollutants in the air.

Other things that can be done to prevent allergies

The best way to help reduce the amount of pollutants in the air in your home is to eliminate them to begin with. Some of the things that you can do to help reduce particles are:

  • Do not smoke in your house
  • Be sure to stay on top of dusting and vacuuming regularly
  • If there is any sight of mold to be sure to clean and remove that immediately

All of these can cause lung and breathing problems if left untreated. It is also a good idea to make sure to discuss the reason you are purchasing the air purifier, and what your concerns are in your home. Not all of air purifiers will work on every type of particulate.
