Skin Allergies
Types
Many people do not realize that everyone is susceptible to skin allergies. You can even have an allergic reaction to products that are use every day. 2 of the most common types of allergies are as follows:
- Allergic Contact Dermatitis: This is where your skin has a reaction to something it directly touches, such as poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac.
- Atopic Dermatitis: Also known as Eczema, it is common in children and infants. Most often it will go away by the time the person reaches the age of 25.
Causes
Some of the things that can cause skin allergies to appear are as follows:
- Emotional stress
- Asthma
- Allergic rhinitis
Symptoms
You may experience redness or swelling as well as blistering or pimples. Generally the area will be red and swollen and will show spots with hives or rashes. The symptoms of atopic dermatitis would be an itchy rash that starts off with a little white pimples with the center being red.
Children
When an infant or child scratches at the area it can become infected which will produce a fluid spreading the rash over a larger area. Often times this type of skin allergy can show up on other areas such as the arms or legs. You usually will not see it appear where the diaper is on an infant. When this rash appears in older children you will generally see it behind the knees, opposite the elbows and on the inner forearm. If the skin stays chronically affected by the rash, it can become thick, dry and even turn to a brown color. You may even see some children develop a rash on their eyelids, the soles of their feet as low as the palms of their hands. Teenagers and young adults will generally show this type of rash on the bend of the elbow, the face, neck, chest and the back of the knees as well as other areas on the body.
Treatment
There are various ways to treat skin allergies. If your reaction is mild, then you may seek medication solutions at a local pharmacy. They offer many over-the-counter remedies that can help you with mild symptoms. For more severe situations you will want to contact your physician so you can go over what your symptoms are. He or she may even suggest doing allergy testing to see if they can desensitize you to think you're allergic to.
