Treatment
If you are experiencing an allergic reaction after taking a swim there are several possible treatments available.
Wash the infected area on the body: It’s best to use soap and water; however do not use hot water. This will almost certainly exacerbate the situation. If it’s in your hair, rinse thoroughly and shampoo using specially formulated shampoo for swimmers.
Wash your cloths: This is only applicable if an article of clothing was exposed. Avoid detergents and any other cleaning agents containing chlorine bleach. There are many safer alternatives for cleaning and disinfecting your clothing and home.
Medications: Many people are able to use over-the-counter drugs to help alleviate adverse skin reactions. The following are a few of the most popular ones:
- Benedryll
- Hydrocortizone cream
- Calamine lotion
It is important to see your doctor as soon as possible before starting any treatment. They should be able to provide you with the best OTC product or prescription for your chlorine allergy.
