What are the symptoms?

People can be affected by even the smallest dose of peanuts.

The following is a list of symptoms:

  • Anaphylactic shock
  • Severe swelling
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Heart failure
  • Circulatory collapse
  • Gastrointestinal discomfort

These symptoms can range from mild to severe - the most severe being death.

Peanut allergies in schools

Since many children are allergic to peanuts, lunches that are served in public schools can be concern for many parents. However the foods prepared in the school cafeteria shouldn’t be the only fear. It’s very common for students to trade lunches with their peers. This is why it’s important to educate your child on the dangers, so they’re not tempted.

Treatment options

There is no actual treatment to cure an allergy; however there are medications that are designed to treat the symptoms. The best way is avoidance. Be sure to read labels on foods to make sure it contains no peanuts in any form. Also when eating out check with the restaurant to see if they’re cooking your food in peanut oil.

If you accidently eat something that contains peanuts you need to get injected by an epinephrine or adrenaline shot as soon as possible. People with severe allergies should carry a kit with them containing these types of injections.

They can help prevent or even stop anaphylactic shock. The adrenaline will increase your heart rate which will constrict your blood vessels. Most will help to relax your muscles and reducing swelling. As soon as the symptoms start to go away, the person must be taken to the hospital so they can be looked at by a physician.
