Is There a Connection Between Asthma and Mold Allergies?

If you find that you suffer from allergies year round and find little to no relief with the change of seasons, you might be allergic to mold spores.

What is a mold allergy?

Mold is a type of fungi that grows by its cells known as spores multiplying. These spores are spread by wind and air and when they get into a person’s lungs they can cause respiratory distress.

What Are The Symptoms?

There are several symptoms that can be experienced by a person. Some of these are:

  • Sneezing
  • Chronic Cough
  • Sinus Headaches
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Nasal Congestion

While many of these symptoms are similar to typical allergy problems depending on the mold it can be much more harmful than say an allergic reaction to pet dander or pollen. Although people who have allergies to pollen, or whose family has a history of allergies are more likely to be allergic to mold.

Can it cause asthma?

Some forms of mold are toxic and because it spreads via the spores by way of wind and air circulation, it is important to make sure you do not have it in your home. This is especially important if people in your home already suffer from asthma or some other respiratory illness. It has been shown it can cause asthma if someone already has difficulty breathing. Some of the places you might not think of looking for mold in your home are:

  • Foam Pillows
  • Closets and Basements
  • Dryer Vents
  • Garbage Bins and Cans
  • Refrigerator Door Gaskets
  • Under Sink Cabinets

Conclusion

It has been shown in recent studies there is definitely a link between indoor mold allergies and asthma. If you think you might be suffering from a mold allergy it is recommended that you get tested and then have your home checked for mold so it can be removed.
